Michael Hintze becomes Member of the Order of Australia

The Australian reports that Michael Hintze has been made a Member of the Order of Australia, in recognition of his philanthropic efforts:

Michael Hintze insists that, contrary to popular opinion, money can buy happiness. But only if you give it away.

"There's a huge pleasure in giving," says the billionaire fund manager and philanthropist who has been made a Member of the Order of Australia in this year's Australia Day Honours. "It's a wonderful thing to be able to do."

Hintze likes to cite research conducted at Harvard Business School that suggests that people report significantly greater happiness if they make charitable donations or give gifts to others rather than spending on themselves.

He is a firm believer in this philosophy, having given away an estimated $45 million over the past eight years through the Hintze Family Charitable Foundation, which supports causes as diverse as London's National Gallery, the Vatican and Sydney University.
