AFR: “Sir Michael Hintze: urgent lifting of COVID restrictions needed”

In an interview with The Australian Financial Review, Sir Michael Hintze outlined why it is crucial to re-open the economy while rolling out more robust testing and clinical pathways to isolate and treat those infected by coronavirus.

“We need to open up in a way that allows society to continue to function, while providing protection for the fragile and susceptible in our society," he said.

"Without opening up the economy and society, and providing clinical pathways, there will not be resilience to cope…Lockdown, which has resulted in a halt to economic activity, is not sustainable – it is damaging to society, to people's aspiration and to the economy."

He highlighted the critical balance between public health and the economy, noting the importance of sound political decisions that take into account the knock-on effects of policies to prevent the spread of the virus.
